History of Sturgeon Management

Copy of History of (2).png

Ryan Koenigs grew up on the eastern shore of Lake Winnebago and developed a love affair with sturgeon at a relatively young age. Some of his fondest childhood memories are sitting in a boat with his father and grandfather hook and line fishing for lake sturgeon on the Menominee River. Ryan aspired to make a career in fisheries management and was fortunate to land a position as a fisheries technician with the Wisconsin DNR in Oshkosh under the tutelage of Dr. Ronald Bruch. After four years as a fisheries technician, Ryan was hired as the Winnebago System Sturgeon Biologist in 2012. In that position, Ryan spends his time conducting assessments of the sturgeon population, leading an ambitious public outreach program, facilitating habitat projects and integrating with internal and external partners to ensure the sustainability of the sturgeon population in the Winnebago System and the tradition associated with sturgeon spearing.
